In the past, contributions from the very rich to the poor were most often made anonymously. Many of the direct recipients of charity did not even know the identity of their benefactors. Today all this has changed.

However, there is no doubt that endorsement of various charities by well-known film stars, musicians and sports personalities, coupled with the celebrities’ own actual high-profile donations, can vastly increase public awareness of some indisputably worthy causes.

Underprivileged children, homeless refugees, victims of natural disasters and sufferers from diseases such as AIDS are among the unfortunate people who have been hugely helped ” not only by generous donations from wealthy personalities, but also thanks to contributions made by ordinary donors who have been deeply moved by the charitable activities of public figures they admire.

Caring Stars

One well-known celebrity philanthropist is actress Angelina Jolie, who uses her fame and fortune to raise awareness of the plight some 20 million refugees in 120 countries around the world. Her work on behalf of refugees began in 2001 when she was filming in Cambodia, where she decided to adopt a refugee child. By adopting orphaned children ” her son Maddox from Cambodia, and a daughter Zahara from Ethiopia in 2005 ” Jolie has also sparked interest among other prospective parents to help or adopt other needy children around the world.

Named a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Commission for Refugees in 2001, Jolie has toured many other refugee locations including Thailand, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, the Balkans and Ecuador. Besides pledging and donating several million dollars to different charitable causes, she also champions the cause of banning land mines.

Film actor and producer George Clooney is another fervent supporter of significant causes. These include the ‘ONE Campaign’ to eliminate AIDS; and ‘Make Poverty History’, part of an 84-nation coalition calling for a breakthrough against poverty throughout the world. He is also involved in the Global Campaign Against Poverty (GCAP), which aims to narrow the gap between rich and poor by addressing man-made factors such as unjust global trade systems, debt burdens that suffocate any chance of a country’s economic recovery and ineffective aid in impoverished areas of the world.

Together with Samuel L Jackson, Clooney co-sponsors ‘Rock for Darfur’, a series of charity concerts organised by MySpace.com and Oxfam. The funds go to support Oxfam’s disaster relief work and to aid refugees in Sudan and neighbouring Chad. Finally, there is ‘United Way’ ” Clooney’s own self-supported programme which collects money and goods from various donors and distributes the proceeds to local charities.

Jackie Chan is Hong Kong’s most famous film star. In 1988, he founded the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation to offer scholarships and active assistance to young people in Hong Kong. The foundation’s motto is: ‘To help, to heal and to excel.’ As Jackie explains: “Sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a person’s life. Long ago, when I was a child in need of assistance, someone was kind to me. My charitable foundation is my way of passing on that kindness. By providing scholarships, grants and funding … I am helping to make the world a better place.”

Chan’s charitable donations cover a wide spectrum that includes home care for youngsters at risk; help for unemployed youngsters; professional self-empowerment counselling; training camps for students; and anti-suicide campaigns. Over the years, the foundation’s activities have grown substantially, broadening their scope to include medical services and help for victims of natural disasters or people suffering from serious illnesses.

Environmental Warrior

Popularly described as a ‘Hollywood heartthrob’, youthful movie star Leonardo DiCaprio is a passionate defender of the environment. To foster greater awareness of environmental issues, he actively cooperates with organisations such as Global Green USA, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and National Geographic Kids.

His own Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation focusses particularly on global warming, which can be combated by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting alternative and renewable energy sources. “I urge individuals around the globe to stand up,” he declares, “and ask local leaders, if they haven’t already, to pledge to purchase cleaner cars, build green facilities, and buy green power like wind or solar energy. Our actions may determine if we become a casualty in the war for a habitable planet for generations to come.” His concerns also extend to maintaining clean water supplies throughout the world (DiCaprio estimates that 1.2 billion of the world’s people do not have access to safe drinking water) ” and he is a fervent advocate of preserving the earth’s biodiversity.

Philanthropic Sportsmen

In 1994, at the height of his sporting career, tennis champion Andre Agassi set up the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation (AACF) to provide recreational facilities and educational opportunities for children in southern Nevada, USA, especially in the Las Vegas area. It has supported more than 20 organisations and raised more than US$60 million since it was launched. Its special mission is to help abused or abandoned children who are considered ‘at risk’ or deprived of basic opportunities in life. In order to foster character and self-esteem in these children and enhance their career possibilities, the Foundation funds a combination of emotional, physical and academic programmes.

The Andre Agassi Boys & Girls Club, opened in 1997, features a basketball court, tennis courts, a computer lab, a library and a teen centre offering a variety of activities. Through the tennis Team Agassi and the basketball programme Agassi Stars, children learn the values of good sportsmanship. They also attend study sessions. By balancing athletics and education, the Agassi Club provides not only a safe place for youngsters to go after school, but a positive learning environment. In 2001, the Foundation donated an additional US$720,000 towards building an Andre Agassi Cottage for Medically Fragile Children.

Also committed to children’s welfare is seven-time Grand Slam tennis champion Roger Federer. In 2003 he launched the Roger Federer Foundation in Basel, Switzerland to fund projects for disadvantaged children, especially in South Africa. Following the devastating 2004 tsunami, he instigated several other fund-raising initiatives, including the ATP All-Star Rally for Relief. This led to a global partnership with UNICEF, and in April 2006, Federer was appointed a UNICEF ‘Goodwill Ambassador.’ UNICEF Executive Director Ann M Veneman voiced her confidence in his ability to make a difference when she said: “Roger Federer will bring extraordinary energy and talent to working with UNICEF to improve the lives of children throughout the world.”

Federer believes sport can help overcome injustice and build bridges between cultures. “As tennis players, we have a unique opportunity,” he says. “We are given a chance to visit so many different countries and cultures and interact with people from all walks of life. It is our responsibility to…use our fortune to make a difference in the lives of those who most need it. If I can make a contribution to this, I am more than happy to do so.”

Fulfilling Dreams

As a child, Tiger Woods dreamed about becoming the world’s best golfer. “I worked hard,” he says, “and applied my family’s values to everything I did. Integrity, honesty, discipline, responsibility and fun ” I learned these values at home and in school, each one pushing me further toward my dream.” Knowing that thousands of other children dream about their futures too, Tiger and his father set up the Tiger Woods Foundation in 1996. “Through personal enrichment programmes, scholarships, direct grants, junior golf teams, and the new Tiger Woods Learning Center completed in 2005,” explains Tiger, “the foundation is helping millions of children reach their dreams.”

The Tiger Woods Foundation makes direct community investments through its grant and scholarship programmes. In 2005 it awarded nearly US$2 million in grants to youth-related programmes, and gave the Baton Rouge Area Foundation $200,000 to set up a Hurricane Katrina educational fund. The Foundation also donated $100,000 to Give2Asia to aid children displaced by the 2004 tsunami. The Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) Tour contributed a matching amount of $100,000. Another well-known PGA champion golfer, Phil Mickelson, was the catalyst behind a charity designed to benefit America’s military men and women. Called ‘Birdies for the Brave’, it is sponsored by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Charitable Gift Fund. Amounts of US$100 for each ‘birdie’ and $500 for every ‘eagle’ that Phil makes are donated to help military families by financing education for the children of deceased military personnel, or support handicap-accessible homes for severely-injured or disabled American veterans. In partnership with Exxon Mobil, the Mickelsons also co-sponsor a five-day ‘academy’ for mid-primary level teachers to improve their skills in motivating children and teaching mathematics and science.

Scoring for Families

Basketball superstar Michael Jordan’s record-breaking achievements on the basketball court may have ended with his retirement in 1999, but his charitable work continues to benefit organisations he helped establish. In 1996, at the height of his athletic career, his US$2 million contribution helped finance the opening in Chicago of the James R. Jordan Boys & Girls Club and Family Life Centre (named after Michael’s father). The club offers children’s recreational and learning facilities, infant day care and a family healthcare centre.

In the same year, he committed $1million to the University of North Carolina to set up its Jordan Institute for Families. At its dedication ceremony, he explained, “I feel very blessed and fortunate to have had a family structure which nurtured and provided a positive influence for myself and my siblings. Many young people today are overwhelmed by the pressures of life, struggling and trying to survive. I am supporting the Jordan Institute for Families because I believe that everything that can be done should be done to preserve the family and to improve the quality of life for all individuals, especially children and the elderly.” Jordan remains involved with the Boys & Girls Club of America, UNCF/College Fund, Special Olympics and a variety of other organisations supporting children and families. British football icon David Beckham and his popstar wife Victoria established their own charitable trust in 2002, and more recently joined forces with UNICEF to raise funds for children worldwide. In January 2005, Beckham was appointed a UNICEF ‘Goodwill Ambassador’ with a particular focus on the UNICEF’s ‘Sports for Development’ programme. Sport is seen as a positive force to improve the lives of children throughout the world, particularly those who have been affected by disease, poverty or conflict.

Beckham’s first activity as a UNICEF ambassador was to launch a global appeal on behalf of the 1.5 million children who were victims of the 2004 tsunami, supporting the organisation’s humanitarian work in the region. He’s appeared in a series of films to raise awareness of those children who are being forgotten in the fight against AIDS. Through UNICEF’s ‘Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS’ campaign, contributions go towards helping millions of children. Proceeds of a World Cup Party hosted by the Beckhams in May this year generated funds that will enable UNICEF to reach many more children around the world. David and Victoria have also contributed to Children Today, a London-based charity for disabled children.

Fighting Poverty and Malaria

Irish pop star Bono (real name, Paul Hewson) has been deeply involved with social and political causes since the 1980s. The U2 star’s involvement with the Bob Geldof’s Band Aid and Live Aid charity projects secured his place as a worldwide legend. From 1999, he has increasingly dedicated himself to relieving third-world debt and raising awareness of the plight of Africa.

Since the end of his ‘Elevation’ tour in 2001, Bono has been actively campaigning for debt-relief in Africa and has visited many African countries. In 2002, he set up an organisation called ‘DATA’, to raise awareness of Debt, Aids and Trade problems in Africa. At present, he is particularly concerned about the problem of eradicating of malaria, which is the biggest killer on the African continent. Bono has been quoted as saying that the idea of defeating malaria in Africa would be as exciting as having witnessed Neil Armstrong’s first walk on the moon. In 2003, 2005 and 2006, Bono was a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1984, Bob Geldof organised Band Aid to benefit children dying of starvation in Africa. He assembled Britain’s top group of singers and musicians to record the single, ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’, which became the fastest-selling single record in UK music history, raising over 8 million pound worldwide for aid in Ethiopia. In 1985, Geldof went on to organise two Live Aid concerts, one in London and the other in Philadelphia, featuring more than 60 of rock music’s biggest stars performing ‘live’. Over 100 million pound was raised for African famine relief.

In January 2004, Geldof visited friends in Ethiopia, where he discovered that more people were at risk of starvation then than during the famines of the 1980’s which inspired Live Aid. Geldof communicated his concern vociferously to British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The result was the establishment of a Commission for Africa, comprised of 16 African political leaders and others. Relief measures proposed included the doubling of aid, cancelling debt and reforming trade rules. Following the Commission’s 2005 report, Gelfdof decided to stage eight simultaneous concerts around the world to exert pressure on the so-called rich nations’ club: the G8. The event was entitled Live 8.

Combating AIDS

British singer, composer and pianist, Sir Elton John, is well-known for his support for AIDS charities. As long ago as 1986, he was contributing profits from his recordings to the American Foundation for AIDS Research and encouraging his fans to do the same. Since then, he has worked diligently to foster greater awareness of the disease among the general public.

In 1992 he set up the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) as a charity to fund specific programmes for HIV/AIDS prevention and to support AIDS victims. This non-profit foundation is dedicated to the elimination of discrimination and prejudice against people affected by HIV/AIDS; it also provides specialised services to AIDS victims, and preventive education programmes to people at risk of contracting the disease. Since its founding, EJAF has raised over US$100 million to support AIDS-related programmes in 55 countries around the world.

The foundation’s work is supported not only by John’s own contributions, but through numerous fund-raising events, sports programmes, art and photographic exhibitions, Oscar parties and gala dinners organised or co-sponsored by John, sometimes with auctions of his own and other stars’ personal items. Last year, EJAF introduced new initiatives aimed at HIV prevention among residents of the southern United States and the Caribbean, young people and drug users and people recently released from prison.

In Tune With Children

In the 1980s, pop idol Madonna became a supporter of the charity called amFAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Since then, she has also turned her attention to Children in Need ” a charity that provides practical and lasting support to thousands of youngsters 18 years old or younger who may have experienced neglect, abuse, homelessness or poverty, and may be suffering from serious illnesses, disabilities, psychological disorders or addictions. The Make-a-Wish Foundation, which grants the wishes of children suffering from life-threatening medical conditions, is another of Madonna’s favoured causes.

Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, is suffering from famine, drought, poverty and diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and hepatitis. Most recently, Madonna has contributed generously to Raising Malawi, a charity whose Orphan Care Initiative provides food, medical care, clothing, clean drinking water and schooling to 32,000 orphaned children in the impoverished African nation. Madonna recently demonstrated the extent of her dedication to this charitable cause by adopting a Malawian child.

In 1999, the American singer Mariah Carey received a Congressional Award for her contributions to youth charities and non-profit organisations. She was recognised for her work with the Administration for Children’s Services in New York City, and she participates in Children’s Services’ programmes to ensure that children are raised in a stable family environment. One Carey contribution of over US$1,000,000 went to the children’s Fresh Air Fund, which enables city children to enjoy summer camping in the countryside.

Camp Mariah is a Career Awareness Camp for New York adolescents operated under the auspices of the Fresh Air Fund that aims to expand their awareness of educational and career options. It offers a unique opportunity for nearly 300 boys and girls aged 12 to 14 to engage in an educational curriculum while enjoying camp adventures. Intensive three-and-a-half-week summer sessions and weekend camping trips are complemented by year-round activities in New York City. Camp Mariah was named after Mariah Carey for her generous support and dedication to Fresh Air children.

We can mutually agree making the first million is tougher than the second. Why?

Becoming a millionaire for the first time consists of a lot of twists and turns on the journey. In other words, the road to wealth is not a straight line and key systems must be in place if you plan to attain and sustain your wealth in the future.

Some millionaires and billionaires have strong systems in place because they understand the value of protecting their assets. If you want to protect your hard earned assets you had better get a asset protection program that will protect your wealth.

Without asset protection you will put your family and business at risk. Putting the ones you love and the people that work for you at risk is a poor strategy for long term success.

Case in point, record home foreclosures in the United States exposed a lot of real estate investors and many of them are losing millions of dollars because they failed to follow the golden rule. The golden rule for real estate investors is to make your profit when you purchase a property and acquire asset protection.

In other words, real estate investors must take a long term view of the properties they invest in and factor in asset protection as a part of the equation. There are three key issues you must consider if you plan on remaining in your financial status.

The three legal pitfalls you must avoid include:

1. Lawsuits

2. Taxes

3. Death Taxes

Conversely there are three essential areas you must include in your planning:

1. Asset protection

2. Estate Planning

3. Tax Reduction

So how does one go about protecting their assets? There is only one way to protect your assets, you must treat them like a business, only then can you accomplish your long term objective of protecting your assets.

You must stop thinking like an individual and start thinking like entities. What would a wealthy person do?

Instead of thinking like an individual and being a sole proprietorship, wealthy people structure their business as an entity. What do I mean by this?

Wealthy people who have asset protection structure themselves as limited partnerships and or limited liability companies. They do this in order to capitalize on the benefits derived from asset protection, estate planning, and tax reduction.

The KEY is implementation!

You need a asset security system that will protect your wealth, our system provides the following:

Four Months ago Colliers International did a nationwide survey of 49 metropolitan areas on monthly parking rates. Earlier this month they did yet another survey; and what did they find? The average cost, monthly, to park in a Midtown Manhattan garage isn’t $491.80 anymore - it jumped to a whopping $574 , in only 4 months! This represents an increase of over 14% and Downtown Manhattan experienced a similar increase of 11% for average monthly garage parking, from $444.40 to $500. With gas prices only getting worse everyday, New Yorkers are losing massive amounts of money to their cars, and fast.

How can New Yorkers save?

While one possible answer is to move to an area like West Palm Beach which charges only $8 for 24 hours of parking, not a whole lot of New Yorkers can actually take that option. So what should New Yorkers and those who frequent Manhattan do? The answer is information - knowing not only where you can park on the street for free, but when you can do it. Of course, there are times when parking on the street just doesn’t work. In these cases, information is still the answer. Know as much about the parking garages as possible in the area(s) that you will frequent - what are there rates? Hours of operation? Do they have special promotions and discounts? Very often, one can cut the price for parking in a garage in half, simply by parking a block or two away. As the saying goes, “Knowledge is power”.

While there may be some gems that in certain sizes are more valuable, diamond is simply the most important and famous of all gemstones. It is easily the best known of all gems, having a long and colorful history throughout the civilized world. Because of its great hardness, for many centuries, diamonds were considered nearly impossible to cut or polish. Even its name derives from the Greek word adamas, which means “invincible”. Only after much experimentation were the techniques necessary to polish a diamond developed. For many years this secret was kept among a limited few individuals.

Even comparatively small diamonds with good quality have significant value. Its value derives from three important properties: its hardness; its brilliancy which results from its high index of refraction; and his fire which results from its strong dispersion. Because of its value and durability, the purchase of diamond jewelry has become associated with weddings, anniversaries, and other major milestones.

When making an important diamond purchase, many individuals are confused by the apparent wide range of prices for what seem to be similar stones. The prices of diamond gems are greatly affected by the quality of the stone. It is entirely possible to purchase a one carat loose diamond gem for less than $1000. The quality of such a gem of course, is nothing less than awful. It will have many large visible inclusions, and be badly off-color - perhaps with visible cracks as well. On the other hand, a fine quality diamond of a full carat size may well be priced in excess of $15,000. This huge difference in price between the two is due to the difference in quality.

Understanding The Four C’s of buying a Diamond

In order to help the diamond buying public better understand the quality of diamonds and how they are priced, jewelers developed to four C grading system. This system has been taught to the diamond buying consumer for decades. The four C’s on which diamonds are rated are the following: Carat weight, color, clarity, and cut.

Carat weight -

The carat weight is the size of the stone. Prices are commonly giver per carat, even when the stones are less than one carat. Prices per carat increase as the stones become larger, as larger stones are rarer. There is a significant price increase at round number carat breaks - so stone of 0.99 carats is notably less costly than a stone of 1.01 carats, even though the buyer may no be able to see the difference.

Diamond color -

The preferred color is white and any increase in coloration results in a less valuable stone. Common pale colors found in diamonds include yellows, browns and grays. Good values can sometimes be found in near white stones that appear white to the eye, but under careful scrutiny are actually very pale colored. Stones with deep color are called fancy colored stones and are more valuable than pale colored stones that are not white or near white. Such light colored stones, mostly from Australia, have been promoted in recent years as “champagne” colored diamonds.

Diamond clarity -

Any flaws within the stone greatly detract from the value. Flaws run the full range from tiny white specs that cannot be seen without magnification, to large black inclusions that severely mar the appearance of the gem. Most diamonds have at least slight inclusions, and better prices can usually be obtained on stones with slight inclusions, but are still so small that they cannot be seen without magnification to assist the human eye.

Cut and Polish -

A diamond needs to be properly cut and polished to show its maximum brilliance and fire. Stones that are cut too deeply or too shallow do not reflect the full amount of sparkle and brilliance. Improper polish also reduces brilliance.

Below is a wonderful story from the June 29, 2006 Sydney Morning Herald that shows how easily we are affected by pictures—subliminally. I want you to enjoy it and read it carefully. There are two very important points that I hope you make for yourself. Here’s the story:

“The eye on the wall spots the selfish gene.”

A simple experiment in a typical office kitchen takes us inside the human mind, writes Ian Sample.

HONESTY may well be the best policy, but it often deserts us when no one is watching, psychologists say. Experiments with an honesty box to collect payments for hot drinks reveal that people are better at paying up when under the watchful gaze of a pair of eyes.

The surprise is that the eyes were not real, but photographed. The finding, which researchers believe sheds light on our evolutionary past, could be turned to practical use.

Psychologists say images of beady eyes could boost ticket sales on public transport and improve surveillance systems to deter antisocial behaviour.

Researchers at Newcastle University set up the experiment in secret, so colleagues would not change their behaviour. They attached a poster to a cupboard of mugs above an honesty box alongside a kettle, with tea, coffee and milk. Over 10 weeks, they alternated weekly between images of eyes and flowers.

“We put the poster in a position that you couldn’t fail to see it as you were getting a mug,” says Melissa Bateson, a behavioural biologist and leader of the study.

At the end of each week Dr Bateson totted up the money in the honesty box and the amount of milk used - an indicator of the number of drinks consumed. The money shot up every week the poster showed a pair of eyes.

Bateson says that even though the eyes were not real they still seemed to make people behave more honestly. The effect may arise from behavioural traits that developed as early humans formed social groups that bolstered their chances of survival. For social groups to work individuals had to co-operate for the good of the group rather than act selfishly.

“There’s an argument that if nobody is watching us it is in our interests to behave selfishly. But when we think we’re being watched we should behave better, so people see us as co-operative and behave the same way towards us,” Bateson says.

People paid between 10 pence (25 cents) and 30 pence when pictures of flowers were put up. When the eyes were used the payments went up to nearly 70 pence a litre. People paid more if the eyes were those of a male.

“We thought we’d get a subtle effect with eyes, but it was really quite striking how much difference they made. Even at a subconscious level, it seems people respond to eyes, and that might be because eyes and faces send a strong biological signal we have evolved to respond to.”

The scientists say companies and governments could tap into our evolved response to a person’s gaze to improve honesty. “It raises interesting questions about how we might improve systems to reduce antisocial behaviour and things like making people pay up on public transport. Signs that say ‘CCTV cameras in operation’ should, perhaps, be accompanied by a pair of eyes instead of a picture of a camera. We’ve not evolved to pay much attention to cameras,” Bateson says.

***

What is the first important point of this story?

Do you think you are less selfish when you imagine someone is watching you than when you imagine you are alone?

If so, do you accept that fact about yourself? I sure hope so.

Male eyes brought in more money than female. Do you accept the fact of subliminal influence on the subconscious mind?

Images formed by age seven usually give greater power to men than to women. I hope all men and women accept their relative powers and responsibilities.

Imagination can lead or destroy us.

I hate math. No subject in school gave me more fits of frustration than algebra, geometry and algebra II. Still, I graduated both high school and college with the two most important mathematical skills: the ability to figure a 15% tip and understand the Wall Street Journal.

Last week I heard about a mathematical theory that was described by its creator, Jacob Bernoulli, as, “so simple that even the stupidest man instinctively knows it is true.” This is my kind of math!

The concept is known as The Law of Large Numbers and as with any theory, there are all sorta ifs, ands, and buts that tie into ol’ Jake’s idea. But I’m going to guess you, faithful reader, are not a mathematician and therefore want the layman’s definition. Your wish is my command!

The Law of Large Numbers states when there is a percentage of a real number, the number represented by the percentage rises with the total. So, if 5% of 100 is five, then 5% of 1000 will rise to a larger number, which is of course 50. The bigger the number, the higher the number represented as a percentage.

This is where we all insert a giant, “Duh!”

But here is why this is so much on my mind. Last week, we saw a horrible, horrible tragedy at Virginia Tech. In 1995 we were equally shocked when, on another April morning, we saw scores of people die in Oklahoma City. In 1999 we were stunned by two teenagers gunning down a dozen of their classmates in Colorado.

Each of these situations were heartbreaking, and in an effort to try and make sense of the senseless, I bet you’ve probably heard some old folks (and maybe not-so-old) saying something to the effect that the world is on a downward spiral to where pitchforks are plentiful and A/C is at a commodity! Such a position is usually followed up by a rant about how the world wasn’t like this back in the day - why just look at all these shootings, all these murders, all this death! This is more often that not topped off with the final “point” we’ve heard time and time again: I just don’t know what the world is coming to…

Well, I do!

The Law of Large Numbers considers that the world is NOT, in fact, on a fast track to destruction. Here’s why:

In 1900, the population of the U.S. of A. was 76 million. In 2000 that number was 276 million, a scant 263% increase.

If, according to the FBI, 1 in 10 Americans has psychopathic or sociopathic tendencies, that’s a whole, WHOLE lot more individuals walking around now than before the horseless carriage came along.

As the population continues to skyrocket, so will the actual numbers of incidents like we saw last week. The Law of Large Numbers proves it. The only way to stop this trend is, well, stop having babies! And unless “Children of Men” plays out in the real world, I’m betting reproduction will continue. And so will these types of horrible events. Or maybe next time, the number of dead will reach triple figures. This is horrifying to contemplate!

So, what do we do?

The same thing we do with every type of human adversity; we accept what we cannot change, change the things we can and live our lives without needless, paralyzing fear. There is a beautiful peace that comes with a resolve that we won’t be shaken by the unknown - that we choose to not live under a cloud of fear and terror.

In times like this, in the wake of horrible tragedy, that acceptance, empowerment and the ability to move on is all we really can do.

The Network marketing industry, Multi-level marketing, The Insurance industry, and membership programs are often built around the idea of building an ongoing stream of income from one sale.

Someone pays $97, or whatever amount, every month to maintain their life insurance or active status in their direct sales company and the agent or representative that introduced them to the company continues to receive a portion of that income.

Great idea, and of course the evolution to make everything better has hit this concept too. What if you could make one sale and get paid for a multitude of sales?

With the new term called viral marketing that is possible. In this article we will introduce the concept of Viral marketing and several ways residual income can be generated by you and your company.

“Viral marketing depends on a high pass-along rate from person to person. If a large percentage of recipients forward something to a large number of friends, the overall growth snowballs very quickly.” (If one could attach an income stream to that viral marketing, wouldn’t that be ideal?)

But what about the residual part?

“Residual income (also called passive or recurring income) is income that continues to be generated after the initial effort has been expended.” (Compare this to most people’s income focus: linear income, which is “one-shot” compensation or payment in the form of a fee, wage, commission or salary.)

There are a variety of ways residual income can be earned. Here are some examples:

Transfer the rights to a book you wrote, a software program you created, a gadget you invented, or a song you recorded, to a company that agrees to pay you a percentage of each copy of your work sold in the future.

Become an actor and draw residual income from each of your movies, TV shows, or commercials, each time they run.

Let an oil company drill a well on your property in exchange for a percentage of the revenue.
Purchase an office building or other real estate that earns you recurring income through lease or rental payments.

True, these ways of earning residual income generally aren’t that easy to implement. But there are even more attainable ways, better suited for the average person:

Start a savings and investment program that pays you residual income in the form of interest or dividends.

Create and market your own information products.
Join associate programs.

That’s a brief overview for you to start brainstorming over, for an easy answer to how you can take advantage of this powerful concept visit: www.viralresidualincome.com

Career experts always say, “Don’t send your resume to the Human Resources department, where it will get lost in the shuffle - send it to an individual person in the company.” Well, great - but how do you actually do that? It’s not so easy to pin down a name for a person who could actually read your resume or pass it on to the hiring manager. Here are ten tips to get you going.

1) Look on the company website, under About Us. There should be Management Bios section. Either the VP/leader of the function you’re interested in (e.g. Marketing or Engineering) or the VP/leader of HR is a great person to call or write to. Both of those people should be listed on the website (although a lot of the time, the head of HR is not shown in the Management Bios, because HR is often a second-class citizen, function-wise, sad to say). If the company is enormous - say 10,000 employees are more - the very lofty manager whose bio is on the website may be too lofty to do you much good, unless you are interested in an executive position. If that’s true, you need a closer-to-the-action person who will not pitch your resume (hopefully) immediately upon receipt.

2) Use LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com), searching on the target company name, to find people who work there OR who used to work there OR who do business with the company now. Make contact with one of these folks (via a mutual LinkedIn connection) to express your interest in communicating with the correct person at your target company, about a job.

3) Use a WorldWIT email group (like DesertWIT in Nevada or DutchWIT in the Netherlands) to get contacts in a target company. Membership is free - just go to www.worldwit.org and join your local chapter. Men and women are welcome. (Full disclosure: I lead this group.)

4) Use Google to find someone appropriate at the target company. Try a search like Apex+Foods+marketing+director. Try a bunch of different things. You’ll find media profiles, reports of Apex Foods managers speaking at events - a ton of stuff, very likely. It’s actually pretty easy to collect names inside a company. The key is to get the appropriate names, and of course, to contact people who still work for the company.

5) Also use Google’s Blog Search functionality to locate people. Lots of stuff shows up on blogs that wouldn’t make it into typical Google web-search returns.

6) Check out the online archive for the local business paper in the city where the company is located (that is, the location that you’re interested in joining.) Sometimes you have to pay for a subscription to access the archives. If you buy and read the paper frequently anyhow, you might want to go ahead and pay for a subscription, if it will help you get the job you want.

7) Also search the archives at Yahoogroups.com to see any mentions of the company and its key folks, the ones you are seeking contact with, in any of the Yahoogroups discussion lists. Current or recent job postings show up like crazy in Yahoogroups archives, and if they’re current, the person who posted the job opening is almost certainly either the hiring manager (or connected to the hiring manager) or the assigned HR person. The only exception arises when a random (unconnected) employee of your target company posts a current job opening on a Yahoogroup that he or she belongs to, just to be helpful. That’s okay - if you contact this person about your career interest, he or she will understand why you did so (as long as they remember posting that job on Yahoogroups)!

8) Go to the website of the most relevant/logical association for the person you seek (in other words, the association that he or she would most logically be a member of), and search the site of the local chapter. Here’s an example. If you want to reach the PR manager at Apex Foods, and you’re located in Tallahassee, visit the PRSA website, Tallahassee chapter, and look for anyone who’s a member who works at Apex Foods. Most likely it will be someone in PR at Apex!

9) Back on the company’s own website, review what they say (if anything) about Community Involvement and local causes. There won’t be tons of detail on the company’s page - just, most likely, a link to the site of the charitable organization they support. Then go to the website of that charitable organization, and nose around for information (name and title) of representatives from your target company. For instance, if your target company is a big supporter of a kids’ toy drive, someone from the company will very likely show up on the toy drive group’s website. Then you can contact that person by phone (I doubt that you’ll find an email address) to ask for help in locating the person most closely related to the kind of career opportunity you seek.

10) Lastly, go to your alma mater’s alumni website, and search the database for a current employee or alum of the company you re targeting. Contact this person, letting him or her know your connection (you went to school at the same place and you both have made contact information available to fellow alums - otherwise, your message would be spam) and ask for his or her help in locating an appropriate person to talk with about your job search, at your schoolmate’s employer.

With these tips in hand, you should be able to vault right over the HR department and get your resume to a live human being. Here’s to your next interview!

vTax Treatment LLCs enjoy very favourable tax treatment. They don’t have their own set of tax rules and there’s no such thing as an LLC tax return. What makes them special is that members can choose how the business is taxed.

A single member LLC can choose to be taxed as a:
-Sole proprietor
-S corporation, or
-C corporation

A multiple-member LLC can choose to be taxed as a:
-Partnership
-S corporation, or
-C corporation

By default LLCs are pass-through entities and taxed like sole proprietors or partnerships. In other words, the profits or losses of the business flow through to the members personal tax returns. A single-member LLC must complete Schedule C, just like any other sole proprietor, and multiple member LLCs must complete Form 1065, just like a partnership. You can elect for your LLC to be taxed as a C corporation by completing Form 8832 with the IRS. Alternatively, you can complete Form 2553 and elect for your LLC to be taxed as an S corporation.

The business still remains an LLC, all that changes is the tax treatment. Many tax pros say it’s best to have the LLC taxed as a sole proprietorship or partnership in the early years when profits are small or there are losses. Losses flow straight through to your personal tax return and can offset other income. Later on, when the business is more profitable, it may be a good idea to elect for corporate tax treatment so that some surplus profits kept in the business can be taxed at the 15% corporate tax rate. This is known as income splitting. LLCs that can benefit from corporate tax treatment often go the whole nine yards and incorporate so as to enjoy other benefits unique to corporations, such as access to outside investors and employee stock options. Converting an LLC to a corporation is a non-taxable event.

State Tax Treatment - S Corp Vs C Corp The tax treatment of LLCs (and corporations, for that matter) varies considerably from state to state. Some have much lower taxes than others. For example, Nevada doesn’t levy any income tax on individuals or corporations You can set up your LLC in any state you like, so is it a good idea to pick a state with very low taxes? The answer is NO because if a business owns property, employs people or makes sales in any state it generally owes taxes in that state. So if you form an LLC in Nevada but do all your business in California, you will still have to pay California state income tax. And if you fail to register in your home state you could face heavy penalties. For example, in Indiana an LLC formed in another state faces a penalty of up to $10,000 if it does business in Indiana without a certificate of authority. So why is Nevada so popular with people setting up LLCs and corporations? The main legitimate reason is for the extra liability protection available in that state. The important point is this: Do not set up your LLC or corporation in another state just to save tax.
